After retiring from American Airlines in 1999 Richard McCall studied acrylic painting and figure drawing with Frank Cole at Contra Costa College for five years. Since that time he has painted more than 100 canvases, some of which have been donated for fund-raising purposes to nonprofit institutions, such as the Contra Costa College Library, the Contra Costa College Art Department, Face to Face of Sonoma County, Spirit of Champions-Santa Rosa, and the Yakima Valley Peace Advocates Network.
Richard excelled in mechanical drawing and wood shop while a grade school student in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While in high school, he worked part-time at Giesen‘s Costume Shop. There he developed the skills of sewing and cutting new costumes. Later he worked as a salesman and window dresser for Amlexson‘s, an upscale yard goods store in Minneapolis, where without actually cutting into any of the yardage, he created couture-type gowns each week for all the manikins in the huge window displays. As an adult Richard was the interior designer for three of his own residences as well as those of friends.
His love of bright, crisp, clean colors has finally found a place of its own. Canvas! His favorite subjects are sailing vessels, elegantly clothed women, and winter scenes.
“Painting is the most rewarding and relaxing creative activity I have ever been involved in. I only wish that I had started painting years ago.”
